What happens during a rewire?

During a rewire, new cables are installed from the mains box (consumer unit / fuse box) to the areas that need power such as the sockets, switches, and fixed electrical appliances in your home.

Sittingbourne has many older and character properties that may require that specialist touch when rewiring, but not to worry, we have it well in hand.

The new Fuse Box

When rewiring a property a new Fuse Box (Consumer Unit) is installed to comply with the latest wiring regulations. The electrical system is divided up into several electrical circuits so that the lights, sockets, oven, electric shower, and other equipment is run and controlled separately.

Careful consideration is required at this stage to minimise the inconvenience and disruption should there ever be an electrical problem in future years. It is no good losing power to half of the property if a socket turns faulty in the years to come so we carefully divide the electrical system into different parts.

The wiring

Wiring needs to be run to all of the light switches, light fittings, electrical sockets, boiler (even if it’s gas), electric cooker, EV charging equipment and more. These wires are normally buried in the walls, floors, and loft spaces.

When making cable routes, floors will need to lifted, channels cut into the walls and room created so that the wiring can be run safely to its new locations.

Sockets and Switches

You will need to decide on which finish you might like for the electrical accessories. There is a plethora of options to choose from such as polished chrome, white, stainless steel, brass, and other colours. The design of the sockets and switches can really make a room stand out when it comes to further decorations.

How long does a rewire take?

Every property presents a new set of challenges when it comes to rewiring. The larger the property the longer a rewire could take and the more sockets, switches, and light fittings you require, the more work is involved thereby taking longer.

A standard 3 bedroom semi detached property could take around 5-7 days to fully rewire assuming a basic specification but it’s always best to contact me directly so I can give a more accurate timescale and estimation of costs.

How much does a rewire cost?

I am glad you asked. There is a very handy tool on the website that lets you estimate the cost of a rewire based on your own requirements. There is a link to the tool just here. Remember to add in the bathroom fans, kitchen fans, downlights, and other equipment that you may not have considered.

What do I need to consider?

Remember that you may need an outdoor socket installed, power to a shed or outbuilding, garden lighting, pond pump electrical supply and more. It’s always best to have these ancillary electrical works carried out at the same time as the main rewire to save on costs and potential access problems later on.
