All you need to know about fuseboard upgrades in Medway

A fuseboard upgrade in Medway typically costs anywhere between between £450 and £900 - depending on different factors like the size of the home and the type of fuse board being installed. Whilst it may be cheaper and tempting to try and fix or upgrade a fuse board yourself, this isn’t work that you should be DIYing - not only is this unsafe, it is illegal. In the UK a fuse board upgrade is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations - meaning this has to be installed by a qualified electrician and the work signed off with an electrical installations certificate. What are the main signs of issues with my fuse board?

We recently visited a customer's home in Rochester, Medway. The customer called us as they were experiencing issues of a humming or buzzing sound, flickering lights, frequent circuit tripping and scorch/melted marks on the unit.

Like many other homes in the Medway area, this was an Edwardian property dating back from 1714 through to 1830. We tend to find that the older the property, the older the electrics too. Whilst the fuse board in the customers home thankfully wasn’t quite as old as the house, it was around 40 years old as it was from the 80’s. This was reflected in the problems the customer was facing with their electrics.

If you’re experiencing any of the same issues,  we would advise to get in touch with your trusted fuse board electrician in Medway as it could be time to consider a fuse board upgrade.

What happens during the process of a fuse board upgrade?

First of all we start off with an inspection of the current wiring to look for any potential damage or issues and ensure that the wiring is safe to be connected to the new unit. Of course should we come across any issues we will ensure they’re fixed prior to installation. Next, to make sure that the installation is safe we cut power to the whole home and then disconnect the existing fuse board and remove it.

After the above steps we can then proceed to install the new board, connecting all of the circuits and labeling the unit to ensure you can understand what’s what on the fuse board. Once the fuseboard is installed we run some checks to ensure everything is working and safe, this involves testing each individual circuit and also running checks on insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD’s.

Power is then reinstated to check that every part of the home is being powered properly from appliances and sockets. Once all of those steps have been followed, we issue an electrical Installation Certificate to say the fuse board upgrade has been completed by a registered and qualified electrician. On our end we then register the job to building control via NAPIT.
